3/4* HOTELS

Raise your travel portrait skills in a mysterious, secretive country fiercely guarding its unique, highly spiritual culture and traditions.

Isolated in the Himalayas for centuries and untouched by mass tourism, Bhutan is a hidden gem for photographers - with proud, beautifully dressed people, exquisite monasteries, ancient ceremonies and crimson-robed monks.

This trip is timed around 2 major festivals, allowing us to capture Bhutan's culture at its best, against the backdrop of spectacular, white-washed monasteries.

People in Bhutan are warm, gentle, and happy to be photographed.

The trip comes with full-time photographic coaching by Pawel Lipski including location-specific briefings and daily photo reviews.

Level of Difficulty

Rating 3.png

The Bhutan trip is generally easy as we move around in a private vehicle.

We will however do one hike up to the famous Tiger's Nest monastery, which takes up to 3 hours on the way up and up to 2 hours on the way down, covering 600m difference in altitude. The hike isn't technically difficult and almost all tourist make it - but it is tiring.

You also need to be prepared for a few drives of up to 3 hours on curvy mountain roads.

Highlights

Bhutan-345-Edit-2.jpg

Tschechu Festivals

Festivals are an extraordinary way of discovering the ancient traditions and culture of Bhutan. Tschechu festival in the capital Thimphu is the biggest of all of them. In addition to the performers, it's just as exciting to photograph people in the audience, focused on the proceedings and unaware of being captured. We will also visit a smaller and more intimate festival in Wangdue.

Punakha Dzong.jpeg

Punakha Dzong

the 17th-century Punakha Dzong (a crossover between a monastery / fort / palace) is arguably the most majestic piece of Bhutan's unique architecture, towering over a river valley. With a number of towers, courtyards and colourful dorrs, the dzong provides endless architectural backdrops for people photosgraphy.

Chimi Lhakhang

This small monastery near Punakha rose to fame due to a 15th century Tibetan Buddhist monk Drukpa Kunley, known as "Mad Saint". Upon his arrival, he proceeded to convert local women into Buddhism by sleeping with them, which earned him a title "The Saint of 5,000 Women". He is credited with introducing a practice of phallus paintings and statues in Bhutan, very prominent locally.

Tigers Nest 1.jpeg

Tiger's Nest

Taktsang Lakhang, aka Tiger's Nest is the most iconic sight in Bhutan. It's an insanely photogenic 17th century monastery perched on the cliff of Paro Valley. Its graceful lines show Bhutan's architecture at its very best. Only reachable via a long, high-altitude hike, it's far away from the modern civilisation and seems literally suspended in the past.
